BMI Calculator (Body Mass Index)

The classic body mass index — useful, but it cannot see visceral fat. See why your waist matters more.

BMI is the most widely used weight metric. It is a quick population screen, but it cannot tell muscle from fat or show where fat sits — which is what actually drives metabolic disease.

BMI is a population statistic, not a measure of metabolic health. A person can have a "normal" BMI and still have fatty liver and insulin resistance. The Salinas Method focuses on hormones and visceral fat, not a single weight number.

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²

How it is calculated

BMI divides your weight by the square of your height. Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, 30+ obesity.

Its weakness: it treats muscle and fat the same and ignores fat distribution. A muscular athlete and a person with visceral obesity can share the same BMI.

That is why waist-to-height ratio and metabolic markers like HOMA-IR tell you far more about real risk than BMI alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is a normal BMI safe?

Not necessarily. "Normal-weight" people can still have visceral fat, fatty liver and insulin resistance — sometimes called TOFI (thin outside, fat inside).
